What makes the show so wonderful is watching the social awkwardness of all the geeky characters who work at caltech engaging with Penny but each of them does it in their own unique way. Dr Sheldon Cooper is played as an asexual character that is amazingly intelligent with an astounding IQ but his inability to understand social etiquette and sarcasm lends itself for the writers to create some really funny one liners. Sheldon can be so abrupt and socially inept yet very child like and innocent whereby you can't help but like him.

Watching Howard Wolowitz who lives with his mother and is of Jewish decent try to get off with any female he ever meets is hysterical. Howard thinks he is knowledgeable about women, but in actual fact he is quite nervous in their presence most of the time. Howard loves hanging out and playing computer games with Sheldon, Leonard and Raj. In fact they organise many evenings together to do just that.

Rajesh Koothrappali has to battle with his selective mutism as his main characteristic is his inability to speak around women which makes for some hysterical situations.

As is always the case with these type of sitcoms you have to click with the characters but it doesn't take long before you do. They are all great characters in their own right so many of the story lines can centralise on not just one character.

The love interest comes from Leonard and Penny and it is not dissimilar to that of Ross and rachel from Friends whereby it is constantly will they won't they and when they do it always ends in tears.
